ACS in the Community

  • Musical Opportunities for All

Athens Choral Society has served the Athens-Clarke County community since 1971 by providing opportunities for people to participate in, and attend, free choral concerts. ACS performances have allowed the public to learn about great, classical choral works, as well as newer and less well-known choral pieces. As Athens oldest, non-audition chorus, we are:

    Open to all

    Diverse

    An opportunity for musical growth

An opportunity to hear two free choral concerts each year

  • Support for Local Charities

In addition, each summer we select a local charity and request donations during each of four performances of our summer show, reaching over a thousand people. We have raised thousands of dollars for local charities such as:

    Food Bank of Northeast Georgia

    The Ark

    Athens Area Homeless Shelter

    Meals on Wheels

    Athens Nurses Clinic

    Local USO

    Athens Community Council on Aging

John Corina Memorial Fund

About Dr. John Corina

It seemed a perfect fit to name this fund after Dr. John Corina. He was an important figure in the musical world of Athens for many years. He taught composition, oboe, and theory at the University of Georgia and performed with the University of Georgia (UGA) Baroque Ensemble, and the Georgia Woodwind Quintet for 25 years. He established the New Music Center and the Electronic Music Studio at UGA and in 1985 was awarded the university’s teaching excellence professorship. He was Professor Emeritus of Music following his retirement in 1991.

In addition, he composed over 130 works and received 14 awards from American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and other organizations.  As an oboist, he performed throughout North America and Europe. He was also an organist/choirmaster for 50 years, the latter at Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church and 24 years at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

Even though John was an award-winning composer and consummate musician, he chose to share his great talent and love of music with the community by directing the Athens Choral Society during the early 1990s. He also sang with the Society during the 2000s. With this fund, we honor John for all his musical achievements and particularly for his contribution to the Athens Choral Society.

Purpose

Although the Athens Choral Society is a non-audition chorus open to anyone who likes to sing, we ask members to pay dues and the cost of music each season. In addition, members are required to wear formal attire for our fall and spring concerts. The purpose of the John Corina Memorial Fund is to help offset these costs for members who need financial assistance.
